The origins

Inaugurated in 2016, the Francesco Tabusso Municipal Art Gallery, in its permanent exhibition, contains over one hundred works by the most significant contemporary Piedmontese artists from the post-war period to the present day.
The first promoter of this collection was Francesco Tabusso (1930-2012), an artist of international caliber who has been particularly linked to the Rubiana area since his early childhood. The Art Gallery is only 500 meters from the family villa, built in 1906 and purchased by his ancestor Alfredo in 1926, which has always been his privileged point of reference for summer vacations: many of his works were created here, created in the garden of the residence or in the attic used as a studio.

The Messa valley, surrounded by the Sella and Civrario massifs, with its forests crossed by rich water currents, exerted a great influence on the Master: the green that stands out in its many shades in various works by Tabusso - such as in the “Canticle of the Creatures”, the imposing altarpiece at the Milanese church of San Francesco al Fopponino, painted in Rubiana in the summer of 1975 - is a tangible sign of the memory - always alive in the Artist - of the constant frequentation of our mountains and our woods.

Recognizing and wishing to honor the emotional bond with the Valmessa area and the role played by it in the aesthetic vision of the Master, the Municipality awarded Honorary Citizenship to the Painter in 2006 who, as a sign of thanks, wanted to establish, the following year, the “Fiabe e boschi” award, a painting workshop aimed at fifth-year students of the Giuseppe Simone Girodo primary school.

In this initiative Tabusso was supported by numerous friends - Artists of the caliber of Francesco Casorati, Giacomo Soffiantino and Tino Aime - each of whom donated one of their own works to the municipal administration: from here, with the passage of time, the first exhibition nucleus of the Pinacoteca took its origin, subsequently implemented by new donations from the same Artists or by the will of family members and collectors.

Interior of the Art Gallery

This exhibition was made possible thanks to the availability and professionalism of the architect Massimo Venegoni of Studio Dedalo of Turin and to the financial support offered by the entrepreneurs Giacomo Bonù (Agla Power Transmission) and Lorenza Giordanino (Finder), who wanted to share and support the educational and preparatory purpose that is the basis of our Art Gallery.
